Le chef français François-Xavier Roth, de plus en plus sollicité, délaisse son propre orchestre Les Siècles pour répondre à l’invitation de l’EIC à la Cité de la Musique. Le programme rassemble des œuvres de Bruno Mantovani avec Con leggerezza pour ensemble, musique architecturée, jouée par cinq groupes autonomes de cinq musiciens, et de l’allemand York Höller avec Fanal pour trompette et ensemble, pièce conçue comme un puissant faisceau lumineux évoquant la Révolution française comme aboutissement du siècle des Lumières. Une création mondiale du chilien Marco-Antonio Pérez-Ramirez (Shouting Silences pour violoncelle et 14 musiciens, en création mondiale) ouvre la deuxième partie du concert avant la conclusion scintillante de la pièce At First Light de l’anglais George Benjamin, composée en 1982 (à l’âge de 22 ans) d’après les impressions laissées sur lui par un tableau de Turner dont les éléments semblaient « fondre sous l’intense lumière du soleil ». Deux semaines plus tard au Centre Pompidou, dans le cadre du Festival d’Automne, Susanna Mälkki, directrice musicale, choisit de faire voisiner une création mondiale du jeune compositeur Jérôme Combier (né en 1971), Stèles d’air pour ensemble et électronique, avec les œuvres de deux grands maîtres de la musique italienne de la deuxième moitié du XXè siècle : Franco Donatoni (Flag pour 13 instruments ; Le Ruisseau sur l’escalier pour 19 exécutants et violoncelle soliste ; Hot pour saxophone et 6 instruments) et Salvatore Sciarinno (Introduzione all’oscuro pour ensemble). Avec Jean-Jacques Gaudon (trompette) et Pierre Strauch (violoncelle) en solistes le 12/10 et Pierre-Stéphane Meugé (saxophone) et Éric-Maria Couturier (violoncelle) le 26/10.
