Depuis la deuxième moitié du 20e siècle, la musique se lasse un peu de son idiosyncrasie. D’abord, elle s’ennuie de son rapport avec le public, toujours frontal et plus ou moins unidirectionnel : elle rêverait d’un auditoire plus actif et plus investi. Puis, elle ne supporte plus ses formes : la Sonate, la Suite et le Rondeau ont fait long feu. Parfois, elle remet même en cause ses rituels et son organisation hiérarchique. Au fait de ces nouveaux problèmes, les solistes de l’Ensemble intercontemporain cherchent des solutions. En vidant partiellement la salle de ses fauteuils, ils tenteront d’établir un rapport de proximité et d’échange avec le public. Sur une scène plus ouverte et donc plus réceptive, les œuvres de Cage, Boulez, Maderna, Kagel, Ligeti et Stockhausen résonneront sous la baguette du jeune chef Clément Power. La figure emblématique de John Cage qui, toute sa vie, chercha à libérer les sons des contraintes musicales, fera l’objet d’un forum « John Cage et l’œuvre ouverte ». Un vent d’utopie sur la Cité de la Musique…
