Jouer sur les tempos, les opposer et les superposer, a été, depuis la seconde moitié du xxe siècle, un moyen de repousser les frontières de l’exécutable. D’ailleurs, c’est aux rouleaux perforés des pianos mécaniques que Conlon Nancarrow a confié, à partir des années 1950, ses impressionnantes Études. Sur ces pièces pensées comme injouables par l’humain, les interprètes ont depuis pris leur revanche à travers de jubilatoires orchestrations, dont quelques-unes sont ici dirigées par Susanna Mälkki. C’est que, depuis, les musiciens se sont souvent confrontés à la polyrythmie, comme par exemple avec le Double Concerto pour clavecin, piano et deux orchestres (1961) d’Elliott Carter, un maître du genre bientôt centenaire, ou, à l’opposé, à travers l’expérience des rythmes extrêmes dans Zeitmasse (1957) de Karlheinz Stockhausen. Malicieusement ouvert par le Poème symphonique pour cent métronomes, le concert d’Ictus, le lendemain, rend également hommage à Conlon Nancarrow (Paul Usher lui a composé un concerto in memoriam) ainsi qu’à Steve Reich (né en 1936) et Philippe Leroux (né en 1959).
