John Cage, à la fin de sa carrière, aimait dire qu’il n’avait plus besoin de la musique. Les bruits de la ville, de la nature, de l’activité humaine lui suffisaient pour entendre sa symphonie du quotidien. Son œuvre silencieuse 4’33’’ pose une problématique déroutante : est-elle une porte ouverte sur une nouvelle musique, le silence doit-il être « apprivoisé » par les compositeurs ? Ou au contraire sommes-nous là face à une attitude destructrice, qui ne voudrait plus de musique du tout ? Peter Rundel dirigera des créations proposant une approche du silence en musique, par des compositeurs aussi éloignés que Bruno Mantovani et Christian Marclays, entre autres. Avant le concert, on pourra assister à une conference-débat sur l’influence des grandes inventions cagiennes comme l’indétermination, les œuvres conceptuelles et, bien sûr, le silence.
