Comment est né votre désir d’association ?
Agathe Alexis : Nous sommes très proches les uns des autres. Nos parcours sont assez similaires et nous suivons les carrières de chacun. Au terme d’un travail dans l’institution, nous nous sommes retrouvés un peu hors-la-loi. L’an dernier, René est venu jouer à L’Atalante et nous avons repensé à l’association initiale que nous avions créée avec Christian Schiaretti, Robert Cantarella, Alain Barsacq et moi-même. Nous avons donc décidé de mêler nos outils et nos talents pour cesser de passer nos vies la valise à la main. L’errance ne peut rien créer. C’est l’habitation d’un lieu qui fait aussi le théâtre.
René Loyon : L’idée première est d’échapper à l’isolement incroyable où se trouvent les compagnies. Il est important de rappeler qu’il n’y a de théâtre qu’à travers le collectif. L’Atalante est un lieu repéré qui permet d’envisager un travail véritable de coopérative. Nous mutualisons nos moyens et réfléchissons ensemble au répertoire, à une programmation cohérente et à ce que peut être une identité artistique forte. Il s’agit d’œuvrer ensemble pour affirmer une image forte et belle du théâtre.
Quelle est la marque particulière de ce lieu ?
A. A. : Historiquement, L’Atalante a un peu remplacé le Petit Odéon dans le paysage théâtral français, le budget en moins ! Cette salle présente une alternative entre théâtre privé et théâtre institutionnel, ce qui n’existe pas en France alors que ça existe dans d’autres pays comme par exemple en Russie. Il y a une générosité du lieu qui offre aux jeunes créateurs de faire leurs premières armes, certes avec peu de moyens mais sans trop de frais ! C’est le cas cette année de Manu Laskar qui va accompagner l’ensemble de notre saison, assister les metteurs en scène en création et présenter en mai sa maquette de Maîtres anciens de Thomas Bernhard.
Pourquoi initier ce compagnonnage dans le cadre de votre association ?
Alain Barsacq : Nous avons tous les trois été toujours très attentifs à la formation. Nombre de directeurs de Centres dramatiques ont été nos élèves ou ont travaillé avec nous. Nous croyons beaucoup à l’importance de la transmission. Manu Laskar va suivre nos spectacles toute la saison. L’idée est de travailler avec des gens qu’on va suivre et qui vont nous suivre. Notre projet n’est pas d’encombrer l’Atalante avec nos seuls spectacles mais d’offrir à un jeune de préparer et de réaliser un spectacle. C’est dans ce même esprit que nous avons le souci d’accueillir ceux qui sortent de l’institution et n’ont plus de repères.
R.L : Le théâtre public subventionné est construit comme une pyramide. Sitôt qu’on sort de l’institution, on est livré à la brutalité du marché et contraint de jouer dans des conditions de plus en plus difficiles. C’est quelque chose de profondément injuste. Il n’y a aucune raison qu’un artiste n’ait plus les moyens de travailler. Nous voulons ouvrir L’Atalante à ceux qui ne trouvent pas les havres pour continuer leur travail d’artiste.

Comment travaillez-vous ensemble ?
A. B. : En parlant, en discutant. En dehors de nos propres projets, chacun amène ses points de vue. Nous tenons à ce que tous ceux qui participent à la programmation soient en accord avec l’esprit du lieu, ce pourquoi nous les avons déjà tous réunis.
R.L. : Pour qu’il soit clair que L’Atalante n’est pas un garage…
A. B. : Qu’on peut s’entraider, venir donner un coup d’œil ou un coup de main…
R. L. : En privilégiant l’esprit coopératif…
A. A. : Nous voulons que les artistes choisissent L’Atalante, qu’ils se disent : c’est dans cet endroit que je veux travailler. C’est un lieu dans lequel on s’inscrit entièrement. Et cette exigence donne une formidable liberté !
Quels sont les temps fort de la saison 2008-2009 ?
A. B. : Nous continuons notre travail de compagnonnage avec les troupes et les lieux étrangers avec lesquels nous essayons de monter des projets communs. Fin septembre, nous accueillons l’illusionniste catalan Hausson qui encadrera également un stage de magie pour les gens de théâtre ; puis, en octobre, Youri Pogrebnitchko et le Théâtre Okolo doma Stanislavskogo. En octobre également, nous organisons un festival des écritures hispaniques contemporaines. Agathe Alexis crée Loth et son Dieu, de Howard Barker, en janvier ; René Loyon reprend Antigone en mars et nous reprenons Play Strindberg en mai. Jacques Brücher joue en mars sa formidable saga familiale pour un seul acteur et Philippe Adrien crée Meurtre par omission en novembre.
