« pitié ! » Pourquoi ce point d’exclamation ?
Le titre, écrit en minuscule suivi d’un point d’exclamation, indique à la fois l’humilité et l’imploration. Il fait référence à Erbarme dich, une des plus belles arias de La Passion selon St-Matthieu de Bach. De nos jours, la société exige que chacun se montre solide, sans faille aucune en apparence. La compassion sonne vide tant la politique et la stratégie ont manipulé le mot, jusqu’à en épuiser le sens. Ainsi mène-t-on la guerre au nom du « bon » dieu… Peut-on encore envisager l’altérité de façon sensible ? Sentir la souffrance, physique, existentielle, de l’autre et apporter du soutien face à la complexité du quotidien, sans verser dans la condescendance ? Telles sont les questions que nous voulions explorer, non pas théologiquement bien qu’elles soient liées à l’histoire du Christ, mais en les expérimentant dans nos corps, sincèrement, simplement comme des humains. Et sans donner de leçon.
Comment avez-vous travaillé à partir de la Passion ?
Notre geste prend davantage source dans la musique, puissamment émotionnelle, que dans les récitatifs. Avec Fabrizio Cassol, compositeur, saxophoniste, et cofondateur d’Aka Moon, nous avons sélectionné 24 airs sur la soixantaine que compte l’œuvre. Nous n’avons pas reconstitué la chronique de l’évangéliste, mais puisé librement pour composer des tableaux, qui évoquent certaines scènes, littéralement ou métaphoriquement. D’autres éléments sont venus se greffer, dont des témoignages de condamnés à mort aux Etats-Unis sur leur « dernier repas ». Dans leurs propos, revenait toujours l’amour pour leurs proches, pour leur famille. « I love you » résonne ainsi, en échos, faisant aussi allusion au message christique « aimez-vous les uns les autres ». Nous avons également regardé beaucoup de films traitant de la Passion. La Riccota de Pasolini, censuré en 1963, a laissé son empreinte. Ceci dit, je ne découvre et ne comprend pleinement le sens d’une pièce qu’à travers le regard du public.
Et sur la partition de Bach?
Fabrizio Cassol a cherché l’essence de la composition, en décapant parfois ses accents baroques. Infatigable voyageur, il a sillonné les continents et collaboré avec des musiciens du monde entier. J’entends les résonnances de ces rencontres dans pitié !, des tonalités jazz, manouches, latines, africaines… comme s’il essayait d’embrasser le monde.
Quelles ont été les lignes de recherches chorégraphiques’
La troupe rassemble des personnalités fortes, des danseurs virtuoses, de formations très différentes, présents pour la plupart dans vsprs, si bien que nous sommes d’emblée entrés dans le vif du sujet. Nous avons cherché à exprimer ce que nous ressentions intérieurement, à travers un langage physique qui s’élabore peu à peu, à partir d’improvisations sur des questions banales, sur des détails de mouvement, sur les sentiments provoqués par le chant et la musique, sur des thèmes liés à la Passion, tels que l’expression « la chair de ma chair ». Progressivement naît cette « danse bâtarde » que je cherche, mélange intime de toutes les singularités des danseurs.
La pièce vsprs marque-t-elle un tournant dans votre parcours ?
Chaque pièce correspond à une partie de ma vie, à une équipe de création. C’est pourquoi je me refuse à constituer un répertoire. Ma danse s’est beaucoup déployée sur le terrain sociopolitique. Avec vsprs, je n’ai pas craint d’empoigner les questions relatives à la religion – souvent très politiques d’ailleurs. Pour autant, je les aborde avant tout dans leurs dimensions spirituelles, existentielles, comme questionnement sur le sens de la vie, où chacun livre ses doutes dans l’urgence. Ce qui a éminemment à voir avec l’art.
