D’où vient le projet de co-signer un spectacle ?
Thomas Ferrand : Après avoir vu l’une de mes pièces, Bernardo est venu me parler. La conversation s’est engagée – et elle ne s’est pas arrêtée. Suite à cette rencontre amicale, Bernardo a proposé que nous écrivions quelque chose ensemble.
Bernardo Montet : L’un des grands plaisirs de cet échange, c’est d’être confronté à un point de vue différent sur des préoccupations qui sont les miennes depuis une éternité. J’ai invité Thomas à lire plusieurs textes : il porte sur eux un regard formé par sa culture, par son expérience théâtrale, par la génération à laquelle il appartient.
De quels textes s’agit-il ?
T.F. : Principalement de textes américains des années 1960, traitant de la question noire : Malcolm X, Ralph Ellison, Martin Luther King…
B.M. : Bien que le contexte ait changé, ces textes correspondent aux combats de fond auxquels nous sommes confrontés aujourd’hui. Je pense à Martin Luther King qui voit la non-violence comme une résistance, à Malcolm X pour lequel il n’y a pas de révolution sans violence…
T.F. : Ces questions constituent la matière de la pièce, mais elles ne seront pas abordées frontalement. Il y aura en fait très peu de texte : le travail porte surtout sur l’ambiance, sur l’écriture spatiale et visuelle. Switch me off sera plutôt un paysage, ou un poème scénique.
Bernardo Montet, vous serez seul sur le plateau. En quoi cette pièce est-elle différente des autres soli que vous avez interprétés ?
B.M. : En fait, je ne suis pas seul : le son et tous les éléments scéniques ont une présence que je n’avais jamais expérimentée. C’est tout particulièrement vrai de la lumière, qui n’est pas là « pour m’éclairer », mais joue son propre rôle d’acteur sur le plateau.
T.F. : Le rôle de la lumière est d’autant plus important que nous avons pensé à l’homme noir, décrit par Ellison, qui devient invisible à lui-même à force de ne pas exister aux yeux de la société.
B.M. : On est toujours l’invisible de quelqu’un. Au point, parfois, de vouloir tout éteindre (Switch me off signifie littéralement « éteignez-moi »). Eteindre est la condition nécessaire pour que, peut-être, une luciole apparaisse… Mais il est rare que quelqu’un nous écoute assez pour que la luciole brille. Que reste-t-il, alors, de l’homme invisible ?
