Dennis Cooper observe l’Amérique depuis les marges. Quel regard porte-t-il sur ses contemporains ?
Il s’inscrit dans le sillage des écrivains la « Beat generation » et montre une Amérique déboussolée, une jeunesse éperdue dans le vide de son existence, qui cherche à être vivante par l’autodestruction, le nihilisme, la violence, le sexe, éprouvés à l’extrême. Ces jeunes gens vivent dans un monde parallèle, halluciné, où morale, repères et limites semblent abolies.

Dans Closer, l’angélique adolescent George parle à la première personne mais échappe sans cesse aux contours d’une identité close, comme noyé dans le vide de l’époque…
George, mythomane, brouille sans cesse les frontières du vrai et du faux, de son identité sociale, sexuelle, familiale, intime, scolaire… Il s’invente au fur et à mesure, dans le flux ininterrompu de la parole, par glissements successifs d’une « vérité » à l’autre. Il se dépeint d’abord comme un chanteur célèbre, beau… une icône « star-ac ». Peu à peu pourtant, il craquèle le vernis de ce portrait superficiel, irritant, aussi lisse qu’une image de magazine arrachée à notre époque, et nous entraîne dans les abysses de son intériorité, au creux de ses fragilités, de son humanité. Pris dans ses mensonges, il finit par se dévoiler.
Pourquoi avez-vous choisi plus particulièrement le chapitre II, titré « David » ?
Il sourd de cet épisode une violence comprimée, intérieure, moins trash que dans les autres chapitres. L’écriture concise, presque laconique, rythmique, est travaillée par une puissante énergie souterraine. Cette tension se retrouve dans mon univers esthétique, soigné, précis, et cependant cerné par une violence qui gronde en sourdine.
Fanny Catel-Chanet interprète ce texte. Pourquoi une femme ?
Physiquement, Fanny évoque une femme prisonnière d’un corps adolescent, androgyne. Elle donne chair aux troubles identitaires qui posent la question du genre. Son allure contredit parfois ses propos. L’effet est accentué par la voix, trafiquée, déréalisée grâce à des logiciels. Juchée sur un podium, au milieu d’une boîte noire, close comme un espace mental, elle chuchote des mots qui semblent s’échapper des profondeurs de son cerveau. Le dispositif, très sensoriel, traduit les manipulations et les artifices du discours, cousus de « prêt-à-penser ».
Pensez-vous votre théâtre comme générationnel ?
L’âge, le parcours, la position dans la société… définissent évidemment la fenêtre depuis laquelle on observe son époque. Ils déterminent non un point de vue exclusif mais une ouverture au dialogue. Mon théâtre se saisit des éléments de notre société, sans préjugés, et les place sur scène pour les offrir à la pensée critique du spectateur.
