Comment est né ce projet ?
Denis Chouillet : A la suite d’une demande qui lui avait été faite par l’ensemble Axe 21 de constituer un programme de musique vocale minimaliste, Paul-Alexandre Dubois avait découvert cette partition. Le chanteur Christophe Crapez connaissait également de son côté la pièce et avait envisagé de la présenter à la Péniche Opéra.
Pour ma part, je connaissais également Tom et sa musique. C’était dans l’air…
Quand par la suite l’Atelier Lyrique de Franche-Comté proposa à Paul-Alexandre Dubois de mettre en scène un opéra de chambre, il se souvint de "l’Opéra de Quatre Notes."

Quelles ont été vos premières réactions et impressions en découvrant l’œuvre ?
D. C. : C’est dans les années 80-90, période où la France n’était pas précisément la patrie d’élection de la musique répétitive, minimale ou conceptuelle, que j’ai découvert cette musique. Auparavant, jeune piou-piou de "la contemporaine" plein d’a priori, j’en étais fort ignorant. Heureusement, avec mon ami Frédéric Lagnau, compositeur, qui à l’époque me fit entre autres entendre Reich, nous découvrîmes ensemble les partitions de Tom. Je rencontrai Tom quelque temps plus tard, il me joua des extraits de L’Opéra de Quatre Notes avec son phrasé de bûcheron et sa "voix de compositeur", j’entendis alors : "voi-ci-le-qua-tuor, cha-cun-de-nous-chant’-ra-son-prooooopre-thème" ou "le-té-nor-n’a-pres-que-rien-à-dire", tout ceci sur « si mi ré la » (ou tout cela « sur la ré mi si »). Cela (ou ceci) ne me laissa point indifférent !

Parlez- nous de cette oeuvre et de son compositeur…
D. C. : Sa création française eut lieu en 1982. Depuis ce premier opéra, Tom Johnson en a composé neuf autres. Cet opéra à numéros, avec récitatifs, airs, ensembles et choeurs, parle de l’opéra lui-même et se joue des stéréotypes. Ses personnages sont les rôles vocaux d’un opéra : le soprano, le contralto, le ténor, le baryton et la basse. Tom est un compositeur minimaliste : il se limite ici à quatre notes, sans altérations, et invente à partir des permutations de ces quatre notes des moments musicaux variés. Le langage rythmique des airs ou ensembles est direct et pulsé, les récitatifs se chantent sur une seule des quatre notes. Mais ce n’est pas un "tour de force" pour classe d’écriture. Je crois que l’on peut même oublier à l’audition qu’il n’y a "que" quatre notes. On peut tout aussi bien s’en souvenir et que ce soit un plaisir ! Ne pourrait-on contempler un galet une année durant et s’en trouver comblé ? En faire un slogan électoral ne serait sans doute pas payant : quelque chose comme "contempler plus pour vivre plus" ? Ça aurait de l’allure ! Et si il se trouve que là le galet est un cristal d’humour, d’intelligence, de méchanceté, de tendresse, et – sans avoir l’air d’y toucher – de questions existentielles. Pourquoi bouder ?
Quel est le rôle du pianiste dans l’ouvrage ?
D. C. : Le piano est l’orchestre de cet opéra de chambre, tour à tour clavecin mono-note dans les récitatifs, machine rythmique, tutti dans les airs et les ensembles, ou galet contemplé dans la scène finale. L’écriture est très "blanche", je veux dire qu’on est loin ici du rapport une note / trois indications de phrasé d’une certaine tradition européenne d’écriture, qui a bien sûr tout autant ses vertus et sa splendeur. C’est une liberté passionnante, que va-t-on en faire ? Jouer très droit, ou moins, varier ou non le phrasé, jouer le jeu d’un piano mécanique, ou bien diversifier les couleurs comme dans une réduction d’orchestre imaginaire, "registrer" en quelque sorte ? Et cette “registration“ ne pourrait-elle faire l’objet d’une construction aussi rigoureuse que l’écriture musicale, ne pourrait-on s’inventer un parcours, une progression, dans la façon de jouer ces récitatifs d’une seule note par exemple ? Le pianiste, bien que muet, est aussi dans cette production un personnage sur scène, et cela interagit avec le jeu instrumental et sa dramaturgie.
