Quel sens donnez vous au titre (emprunté à Cioran?) de ce nouvel album : « Le temps qu’il faut » ?
Jean-Philippe Viret : Cioran évoque le temps qu’il faut pour un homme pour accoucher de lui-même. Cela fait longtemps que cette phrase m’accompagne comme un encouragement à jouer ce que je suis. C’est un cheminement qui est long, une succession de pas en avant, en arrière, qui à tour de rôle laisse parler l’intuition ou la connaissance. Quand j’ai commencé la musique, j’avais 18 ans. J’ai d’abord cherché à jouer correctement de mon instrument, puis à devenir un bon musicien, et enfin à envisager une démarche artistique qui me soit propre. Avec un peu de recul, j’ai le sentiment que c’est ce cheminement en tant que tel, avec le temps qu’il nécessite, qui est l’essence même du plaisir. Aussi j’aurais tendance aujourd’hui à me dire que moins j’ai de temps, plus je le prends…
Votre trio réunit un pianiste, un contrebassiste et un batteur. Et pourtant votre musique semble tourner le dos à toutes les références de la formule piano-contrebasse-batterie…
Jean-Philippe Viret : Quand j’ai découvert le Jazz, j’ai été profondément marqué par les différents trios de Bill Evans, et plus particulièrement la période avec Scott Lafaro. C’est donc assez naturellement que j’ai eu le désir de composer et de jouer dans cette formule piano-contrebasse-batterie. Au début, pour écrire, j’ai principalement utilisé le piano, puis de plus en plus je me suis servi de la contrebasse, de la richesse de ces modes de jeux. Dès lors, le morceau se construit autrement, cela ne veut pas forcément dire que la contrebasse est mise en avant, mais elle occupe une place inhabituelle, et de ce fait cela bouscule l’équilibre traditionnel. "Peine perdue", le premier morceau du disque avec un ostinato d’accords à l’archet en est un exemple.
Comment définir le rôle de chacun? On a parfois l’impression d’une co-direction avec Edouard Ferlet… Quel changement attendiez-vous de l’arrivée de Fabrice Moreau?
Jean-Philippe Viret : Cela fait dix ans maintenant que l’on joue ensemble avec Edouard. C’est une belle histoire de musique et d’amitié qui nous permet justement de composer et de jouer en connaissance de l’autre. A l’heure ou les artistes sont sollicités pour présenter sans cesse des nouveaux "projets" avec des castings différents, on s’offre le plaisir de continuer à jouer ensemble. Fabrice Moreau s’est immédiatement investi dans le trio, avec autant de rigueur que d’ouverture. Je n’attendais pas de changement en particulier avec son arrivée. Quand nous avons joué pour la première fois ensemble, cela s’est présenté comme une évidence que c’était avec lui qu’il fallait continuer l’aventure.
Quelle qualité aimeriez vous par dessus tout que l’on reconnaisse à votre musique?
Jean-Philippe Viret : L’immanence….. J’aimerais qu’elle soit appréciée pour ce qu’elle est en tant que telle.
Quel reproche redouteriez-vous par dessus tout qu’on lui fasse?
Jean-Philippe Viret : Je n’aimerais pas que l’on dise de notre musique qu’elle ait la volonté de plaire, via un certain aspect mélodique. J’aime les mélodies pour leur capacité à jouer avec notre mémoire.
Un contrebassiste regarde-t-il et aborde-t-il la démarche de leader et de compositeur d’un "lieu" musical particulier?
Jean-Philippe Viret : A mon sens, être leader c’est fédérer, jouer de la contrebasse également. Donc cela aide! Outre les couleurs propres à l’instrument que j’évoquais précédemment pour la composition, la contrebasse nous permet de jouer des musiques très diverses dans des contextes très différents, avec beaucoup de monde. Etre sideman permet de se faire une petite idée de notre propre manière d’envisager les choses.
