Quelle place occupe la musique de chambre dans votre activité ?
Nicholas Angelich : Depuis mon arrivée à Paris à l’âge de 13 ans, la musique de chambre a été une activité très importante qui m’a toujours permis de rompre la « solitude » du pianiste soliste, de découvrir un répertoire évidemment passionnant et d’apprendre aussi beaucoup en jouant avec d’autres musiciens. Lorsqu’on est en phase avec certains partenaires musicaux, le plaisir du dialogue passe encore spontanément par la musique et n’a presque pas besoin de mots. Même si le récital est devenu une priorité artistique pour moi, la musique de chambre reste un plaisir qui m’est très cher.
Brahms est au coeur de votre actualité chambriste…
N. A. : Brahms a toujours une place très importante dans ma vie depuis mon enfance. Son langage pianistique, le sens de la construction unique qu’il employait et l’imagination tellement riche de son univers m’ont toujours passionné et m’ont toujours semblé naturels.

Les frères Capuçon sont devenus des partenaires musicaux très privilégiés pour vous. Comment les avez-vous rencontrés ? Qu’aimez-vous chez chacun d’eux ?
N. A. : J’ai d’abord connu Renaud au conservatoire puis Gautier un peu plus tard et j’ai toujours été admiratif de leur façon si particulière de jouer ensemble, même s’ils ont aussi des identités très contrastées par certains aspects. Leur façon de « travailler en équipe » musicalement se combine avec une individualité et une sensibilité particulières à chacun. Ce sont deux personnes très importantes dans ma vie et nous avons développé une relation très forte sur le plan musical et amical. Même si j’aime aussi jouer avec d’autres partenaires, à chaque fois que je les retrouve pour faire de la musique, les choses me paraissent extrêmement naturelles et évidentes. Ce sont deux personnes très importantes dans ma famille musicale.
