En enregistrant l’intégrale de la musique pour piano de Robert Schumann, Eric Lesage a réussi un coup de maître qui a attiré l’attention sur un artiste qui avait déjà pourtant quelques grandes réussites à son actif, dont une intégrale Poulenc absolument remarquable. Passé par le Conservatoire de Paris, il finira par aller voir Maria Curcio à Londres, car quelque chose n’allait pas. Cette ancienne élève d’Artur Schnabel lui révélera les secrets de la sonorité du piano. Dure et salutaire remise en cause dont sortira un pianiste au jeu naturel, fluide, virtuose sans ostentation. Aujourd’hui embarqué dans un projet discographique consacré à Fauré, Lesage joue à Gaveau trois des nocturnes du compositeur français, la Mort d’Isolde, puis la Sonate de Berg dont le chromatisme et la sensualité vont si bien avec la pièce de Wagner transcrite par Franz Liszt. Suivra le Carnaval op. 9 de Schumann que Lesage joue sans cette emphase qui en dénature la variété des climats, mais avec une fantaisie et une vivacité adoucies par le rêve. La « Pathétique » de Beethoven clôt cet étonnant programme.
