Adulé autant que détesté ou ignoré, Satie occupe dans l’histoire de la musique française une place singulière, sans racines ni descendances véritables. Debussy l’admirait (il orchestra certaines de ses oeuvres), Cage le compte parmi ses influences et Boulez le méprise… Pourtant son œuvre reste immense et surtout très mal connue, mis à part quelques pièces pour piano (les célèbres Gymnopédies en tête !) et mélodies. Trois musicologues (Ornella Volta, Gilbert Delor et John Supko) nous guident dans le dédale de ses partitions disparates et souvent inclassables, le 7 février, avant que le lendemain, de nombreux musiciens se succèdent sur scène pour lui donner vie, de la musique pour piano seul à celle pour orchestre : les pianistes Alexandre Tharaud et Eric Le Sage, les comédiens François Morel et Olivier Saladin, la chanteuse Juliette ou l’Orchestre Lamoureux (direction Daniel Kwaka) dans Mercure, Parade, Le Fils des étoiles et Jack in the box.
