Au Théâtre du Châtelet, Esa-Pekka Salonen est en terrain familier. En 1991, le jeune chef alors âgé de trente-trois ans y dirigeait, à la tête du Philharmonia Orchestra, un mémorable cycle Stravinsky (avec les trois ballets L’Oiseau de feu, Pétrouchka et Le Sacre du printemps). L’émerveillement allait se renouveler les saisons suivantes, sur le plateau ou dans la fosse (Le Prisonnier de Dallapiccola, Le Grand Macabre de Ligeti). Cultivant au contact de la musique d’aujourd’hui une sorte d’éternelle jeunesse, Esa-Pekka Salonen compte parmi les plus brillants chefs d’orchestre actuels. Il est aussi compositeur mais ses propres œuvres, au moins jusqu’à ces toutes dernières années, n’ont jamais eu un aussi grand retentissement que sa carrière de chef d’orchestre. Comme Leonard Bernstein en son temps, ou comme son compatriote Leif Segerstam, Esa-Pekka Salonen est donc plutôt perçu comme un chef d’orchestre qui compose que comme un compositeur qui dirige. Désireux d’inverser quelque peu les termes de cette étiquette et de consacrer davantage de son temps à l’écriture de ses œuvres, il a récemment mis fin à son mandat de directeur musical de l’Orchestre philharmonique de Los Angeles où Gustavo Dudamel l’a remplacé en 2009 ; il reste cependant le chef principal du Philharmonia Orchestra.
Recherche constante de la clarté
Élève d’Eijnojuhani Rautavaara à l’Académie Sibelius d’Helsinki, Esa-Pekka Salonen appartient à la génération de Magnus Lindberg ou de Kaija Saariaho. C’est avec eux et quelques autres qu’il fonda en 1977 Korvat auki (« Oreilles ouvertes »), un groupe destiné à promouvoir la jeune création musicale finlandaise et à en élargir les horizons. Ses compositions de cette époque sont marquées – au-delà d’un style qui se cherche encore – par une recherche constante de la plus grande clarté (on reconnaît là l’une des grandes qualités du chef d’orchestre). C’est le cas en particulier des trois pièces portant le titre Yta (« surface ») – successivement pour flûte alto, pour piano (ou clavecin) et pour violoncelle et électronique – composées entre 1982 et 1987 ou dans le Concerto pour saxophone (1983). Cette période de jeunesse recèle quelques petits joyaux tels Goodbye (1980) pour violon et guitare, Floof (1988), sorte d’odyssée postmoderne et miniature pour soprano et ensemble, ou Mimo II (1992) pour hautbois et orchestre, d’allure plutôt classique mais marquée du sceau du mystère et regardant vers Bartók et Lutoslawski. Parmi les œuvres plus récentes, celles que l’on a pu entendre à Paris (Concerto pour piano, Wing on Wing) montrent toujours un beau talent d’orchestrateur et versent un peu plus vers un certain néoclassicisme.
Quatre concerts dirigés par le compositeur
Entièrement consacrée au musicien finlandais, l’édition 2010 du festival Présences a vu les choses en grand : une création pour orchestre, de nombreuses premières auditions françaises (dont le Concerto pour violon avec Leila Josefowicz), présence du compositeur à la tête de l’Orchestre philharmonique de Radio France pour quatre des six concerts symphoniques et un somptueux plateau de solistes, de la soprano Barbara Hannigan au violoncelliste Anssi Karttunen.
