Esa-Pekka Salonen compte parmi les chefs « modernistes » : il a installé le xxe siècle au cœur du répertoire et fait de la création une évidence de programmation. Comme compositeur, il a fait siens de nombreux apports de cette musique. Ses œuvres orchestrales, nourries des rythmes et des couleurs qu’ont révolutionnés les compositeurs depuis Stravinsky et Debussy jusqu’à Ligeti et Kaija Saariaho, ont souvent un effet immédiat sur l’auditeur. La couleur et un certain côté spectaculaire sont à attendre avec ce tout nouveau Concerto pour orgue, dont la création est confiée à deux solistes de premier plan : la Lettone Iveta Apkalna et – aux Philharmonies de Berlin et Paris – le Français Olivier Latry, qui partage avec le compositeur et chef d’orchestre une passion pour l’œuvre de Messiaen. Avec les rares – et délicates – Symphonies d’instruments à vent de Stravinsky en ouverture et la grandiose et farouchement romantique Deuxième Symphonie de Sibelius, ce programme est une belle histoire de souffle.
