Celle qu’on soupçonne d’avoir fait pleurer Dieu d’émotion a fait de sa voix le lien qui fédère les Balkans et les relie au monde depuis 50 ans. La Reine des Gitans a débuté sa carrière dans un radio crochet, et c’est auprès de son mentor et amour, le musicien Stevo Teodosievski, qu’elle développe un répertoire où l’influence de l’Inde, les chants byzantins et l’âme balkanique, se croisent et s’accordent dans un souffle précieux. Et certains de ses « coçek » – la musique typique de fête et de festin des Balkans – sont devenus de vrais hymnes traditionnels gypsy. Le chant, le voyage, la rencontre : autant d’ingrédients pour conter l’histoire des Rom au travers de la sienne. Esma Redzepova se raconte, en musique bien sûr, dans « Mon Histoire » (Accords Croisés / Harmonia Mundi, avril 2007), où elle imbrique la petite histoire dans la Grande, alternant complaintes et danses de noceurs, avec la complicité de Titi Robin et celle de l’Ansambl Teodosievski. Une histoire musicale émaillée de politique pacifiste, de tradition rom, de beauté. La mère des Gitans est aussi celle des enfants du monde, mère de 47 enfants de cœur, tous musiciens et membres d’une famille unique en son genre, un orchestre qui parcourt le monde sous la houlette des Nations Unies.
