Milan en 1944, l’Italie fasciste est occupée par l’Allemagne nazie, écartelée entre la guerre d’occupation et la guerre civile. D’un côté, se tiennent les fascistes et les nazis et de l’autre, les partisans. Est-il possible de s’aimer en ces temps où l’homme est un loup pour l’homme ? Elle, Berthe, vit sous la tyrannie de son mari qui refuse de lui rendre sa liberté et lui, N2, nom de combattant partisan, s’oppose activement à tous les abus de pouvoir dans le désespoir de sa cause amoureuse. Le résistant Elio Vittorini par le biais de la fiction de Et hommes et pas dévoile une réalité strictement contemporaine au temps de l’écriture du roman. Partisan, Vittorini est arrêté en 1943 et s’enfuit dans les montagnes au-dessus de Milan pour rédiger Uomini e no. Qu’est-ce qui en l’homme est l’homme et qu’est-ce qui ne l’est pas ? On pense à d’autres écrits de cette époque sombre, L’Espèce humaine de Robert Antelme et Si c’est un homme de Primo Levi. À travers le roman d’amour de Berthe et de N2, l’Histoire se révèle, de même que grâce à la dimension épique de l’oeuvre, l’échec sentimental prend tout son sens. Avec la voix d’un chanteur traditionnel de l’Italie du Sud et des percussions.
