Selon Bruno Thircuir, Désert de Le Clézio est une épopée mythique, la métaphore des voyages et exodes des hommes depuis que l’humanité existe. Une petite fille rêve d’un ailleurs qui la déçoit quand elle l’atteint. Aussi désire-t-elle retrouver le lieu de sa naissance. Cinq personnages participent de cette quête onirique et poétique, une jeune fille, une femme, un étranger, un jeune berger et un vieillard, des comédiens issus de France et d’Afrique. L’équipe artistique s’est constituée au Burkina-Faso. Ce spectacle d’images et d’objets est la fable des voyageurs qui parcourent le monde depuis la nuit des temps, une histoire d’exil qui s’arrête dès l’arrivée en France de Lalla. C’est une jeune fille dont les ancêtres sont les hommes bleus du désert, elle recèle en elle cette mémoire mystérieuse. Recluse dans le bidonville d’une cité maritime, elle prend le bateau pour Marseille vers un même quartier de misère. Elle retourne finalement dans son désert, « rescapée de l’enfer des hommes ». Une dune de sable sous un « ciel tente » offre un paysage idéal à ce déploiement politique de l’imaginaire.
