Comment avez-vous rencontré les élèves de la Manufacture ?
Jean-Louis Hourdin : La Manufacture est la Haute école de théâtre de Suisse romande. Elle regroupe, à Lausanne, les deux conservatoires qui existaient auparavant, l’un à Genève et l’autre à Lausanne. Fin 2011, avec Karine Quintana, nous avons travaillé avec les élèves autour de l’œuvre de Georg Büchner. Nous sommes à Villeneuve parce qu’ils y présentent aussi Entre, leur spectacle de sortie. C’est peut-être parce que je vieillis qu’on me demande de faire de la pédagogie… Plus sérieusement, j’ai toujours eu envie de faire passer cette envie qui fait qu’on ose se dresser sur un plateau : dès ma sortie du TNS, avec les mouvements d’éducation populaire, avec les amateurs, avec des jeunes comédiens, etc. J’aime ça.
Comment avez-vous travaillé avec eux ?
J.-L. H. : Pendant le stage, j’ai commencé par monter Woyzeck ; puis on a voyagé dans toute l’œuvre, grande mais limitée, puisque Büchner est mort à vingt-trois ans. C’est un jeune homme au vrai sens du mot, et j’ai essayé de leur contaminer cette jeunesse-là. Büchner n’est ni démonstratif, ni psychologique, ni sociologique ; son écriture va à l’essentiel, et il est très difficile d’en parler. Il écrit un théâtre de la pensée, radicalement nouveau, avec des phrases courtes, une radicalité de la précision et de l’éclat poétique. Karine Quintana a mis cette beauté pure en musique. On joue Lenz en entier, et après, on donne ce petit cabaret de la pensée qui se saisit de plusieurs extraits de l’œuvre.
Pourquoi Büchner ?
J.-L. H. : Je trouve chez Büchner l’amour fondateur que j’ai pour les poètes occidentaux. Il n’y a pas une phrase que je n’aime pas. Le Messager hessois est le premier texte pré-marxiste : « Guerre aux châteaux ; paix aux chaumières ! », « Veillons et armons-nous en pensée ! » Woyzeck reste la grande pièce contemporaine, même à l’heure actuelle. Lenz est la plus belle nouvelle européenne. La mort de Danton, Léonce et Léna, c’est magnifique. Même dans sa correspondance, il y a des lettres à sa mère, à sa famille, à sa fiancée, qui sont des vraies merveilles. J’aime d’amour cet homme qui a inventé la littérature moderne occidentale. Une fois, des jeunes gens qui sortaient d’un spectacle m’avaient interpelé : « Büchner, c’est un copain à vous ? ». J’aurais bien aimé…
