Les Lettres de Westerbork qu’Etty Hillesum rédige entre 1942 et 1943 depuis le camp de Westerbork, un centre de transit aux Pays-Bas, révèlent le parcours exemplaire de la jeune femme. Hollandaise libre et insouciante au début, Etty Hillesum s’abandonne à la passion pour un psychothérapeute juif allemand. La fureur de vivre de l’amante s’élargit jusqu’à l’amour pour l’humanité tout entière. Tandis que les rafles de juifs se multiplient dans son pays, elle fait le choix de se laisser déporter à Westerbork, où elle assiste ses semblables dans un dévouement sublime. Avant son transfert pour Auschwitz d’où elle ne reviendra pas, Etty confie à une amie des lettres poignantes qui laissent transparaître, malgré l’horreur de l’internement, une irrépressible joie d’être au monde. Lucidité et engagement, générosité et don de soi, la comédienne Bérengère Allaux compose intensément, depuis l’enfer de l’héroïne confrontée aux horreurs de l’Histoire, un hymne à la vie que la scène magnifie.
