« La force d’O’Neill est de créer avec vigueur des êtres d’une profonde vérité humaine dans un style poétique nouveau que l’on peut qualifier de réalisme symbolique, cherchant à rendre sensible au public l’invisible toujours tapi derrière le visible. » dit Guy Freixe du grand auteur américain, Prix Nobel de Littérature en 1936. Les trois courtes pièces réunies par le metteur en scène sont des œuvres de jeunesse, marquées par l’urgence, la souffrance et le mystère et fortement empreintes des origines irlandaises de leur auteur. La Corde, premier tableau du triptyque, révèle la malédiction d’un père et la terrible épreuve à laquelle il soumet son fils. L’Endroit marqué d’une croix, le troisième tableau, reprend en écho les relations entre un père et un fils pris dans la spirale de la folie. Entre les deux, Soif raconte la noyade dans la folie de trois naufragés qui échappent à la mer mais pas à leurs propres errements. Ne pouvant se résoudre à laisser « de telles joyaux » dans l’ombre, Guy Freixe a confié au poète Jean-Pierre Siméon le soin de traduire en français la langue admirable et puissante d’O’Neill et les met en scène avec ses compagnons du Théâtre du Frêne.
