01/01/2000. Le monde se réveille sans passé : le bug informatique du Millemium a englouti le XXe siècle… Peu à peu pourtant, en fouillant les mémoires des uns et des autres, des bribes resurgissent, qui, dans leur joyeuse anarchie, viennent chambarder la marqueterie bien rangée de l’Histoire. Telle est la fiction imaginée par Patrik Ourednik, auteur tchèque exilé en France depuis 1984, dans Europeana, une brève histoire du XXe siècle. Qu’est-ce que la vérité historique ? La vérité littéraire ? La vérité de la mémoire ? Autant de questions qui pointent dans le désordre des témoignages. Pour sonder ce trou dans nos mémoires, Solange Oswald et Joël Fesel, membres actifs du Groupe Merci, nous invitent à une « visite par les voies sensibles des événements de notre histoire », pour dévoiler « ce que commémorations et monuments justement s’acharnent à effacer. » Cernés par le « mur de la mort », ancien dispositif forain circulaire de quatre mètres de hauteur, sept personnages hallucinés racontent les vicissitudes du XXe siècle, entraînées par les deux moteurs de la nature humaine : « construire dans l’espoir, dans le progrès et la raison ; détruire dans la barbarie et les archaïsmes de la déraison ».
