Bartabas a toujours placé le cheval au centre de son théâtre équestre. Acteur au même titre que les artistes – danseurs, comédiens, circassiens – qui ont pu partager la piste avec lui, l’animal demeure le moteur essentiel de la création, le leitmotiv de l’écuyer-metteur en scène. Il semble que cette nouvelle pièce, tout en consolidant cette voie, montre davantage une volonté d’effacer l’artifice. Là où ses dernières pièces, comme On achève bien les anges (élégies), filaient les métaphores et les images jusqu’à une certaine mythification de la bête, Ex Anima revient à un rapport plus simple et épuré, presque originel, au cheval. Peut-être pour le célébrer pleinement et entièrement, après presque trente ans de travail à ses côtés ! Une démarche qui nécessite une attitude spécifique de la part des hommes, comme, dit-il, « se dépouiller de notre ego, de notre corps individuel, au profit d’un corps partagé, anonyme ».
