Le CentQuatre/ installation performance / par Brett Bailey
«L’intention d’Exhibit B n’a jamais été de provoquer la haine, la peur, ou les préjugés. Il y est question d’amour, de respect et d’indignation.» explique Brett Bailey, dont l’installation a été annulée à Londres, et est aujourd’hui programmée au 104 après le Théâtre Gérard Philipe. Créée au Festival d’Avignon 2013, Exhibit B est conçue sur le modèle des expositions ethnographiques, nombreuses au XIXème siècle dans les pays colonialistes, distrayant le public et mobilisant certains scientifiques qui trouvent ainsi matière à expliquer le racisme par la raison, aisément dévoyée. C’est aussi le racisme actuel, la brutalité envers les demandeurs d’asile, et la transmission pernicieuse de représentations déshumanisantes de l’Autre que Brett Bailey expose. Douze tableaux vivants, accompagnés d’un texte explicatif, mettent en lumière un interprète silencieux, un être humain objectivé. Le performeur et le visiteur se regardent, et ni l’un ni l’autre n’en sortent indemnes.
