« L’art d’exagérer est à mon sens l’art de surmonter l’existence », dit le narrateur Franz-Josef Murau – né en 1934 à Wolfsegg, en Autriche. Extinction, publié en 1986, est le dernier ouvrage de Thomas Bernhard, une “anti-autobiographie“ visant à “éteindre“ le temps de la bêtise, “éteindre“ sa famille et tout ce qu’est Wolfsegg, “haut lieu de la stupidité“, où sévissent le mensonge et la grossièreté, où brille “notre soleil national-socialiste-catholique », où vécurent heureux quelques nazis. Et en même temps « je me décompose moi-même, je me désagrège, je m’anéantis, je m’éteins. » L’écrivain installé à Rome doit retourner à Wolfsegg parce que, selon un télégramme, ses parents et sa sœur sont morts dans un accident de voiture. Par nécessité, il travaille malgré sa répugnance à cette désintégration générale en la mettant en mots en toute indépendance, laissant son dégoût contre l’Autriche et contre les siens éclater sans frein. Rappelons que dans son testament l’auteur interdit expressément toute représentation de son œuvre en Autriche.
Adéquation sens et son
Serge Merlin est un intime de l’œuvre et de la voix de Thomas Bernhard. Il a joué Minetti, Le Neveu de Wittgenstein, Le Réformateur… Il portait en lui depuis très longtemps le désir de dire, de jouer Extinction, opus imposant ici ramené à quatre-vingt-dix minutes par Jean Torrent. L’acteur s’empare de ces mots accusateurs et rageurs couchés sur le papier, les fait vivre et résonner avec une évidence immédiatement compréhensible, fondée sur une remarquable et rarissime adéquation entre le sens et le son, qui se module et se modifie de façon subtile et impressionnante au gré des paysages intérieurs traversés par le narrateur, au gré des personnes évoquées – la mère, le père… La performance est d’autant plus impressionnante qu’elle est entièrement au service de cet extraordinaire texte, où le tragique n’exclut pas parfois le rire franc et l’humour complice. C’est comme si Serge Merlin se livrait à la radiographie du texte, à la radiographie d’une âme vivante et enragée, au fil d’une partition impeccablement maîtrisée, et finalement autant sensuelle qu’intellectuelle.
