Comme toujours chez cet octogénaire, l’histoire de ses spectacles reste liée à la nature des collaborations qu’il met en œuvre. Ici, la surprise vient de ce petit appareil habituellement discret, mais qui occupe une place prépondérante dans le quotidien des jeunes : l’iPod. Il garde dans cette pièce sa fonction première, à savoir celle de diffuser de la musique de façon très privée, charge au compositeur Mikel Rouse de proposer un ensemble de partitions, inspirées d’une grande variété de styles musicaux. Celui-ci profite également de la programmation de l’œuvre dans des villes très différentes pour récolter des sons urbains et les réinjecter en live dans la salle. Au final, le spectateur se retrouve au cœur d’un dispositif sonore 3 D mêlant écoute publique et écoute privée, le laissant libre de ses choix musicaux aux hasards des choix opérés à travers le baladeur numérique. Avec EyeSpace, Merce Cunningham creuse une nouvelle fois l’aléatoire, mais laisse au public une place de choix.
