Vous êtes trompettiste de formation. Que vous ont appris vos expériences de musicien d’orchestre pour votre activité de chef d’orchestre ?
Fabien Gabel : Certains chefs ne prennent pas conscience de la pression que subissent parfois les musiciens d’orchestre car nombre d’entre eux n’ont jamais joué dans un orchestre ! En étant parmi mes collègues j’ai compris le sens des mots respect et humilité …
En tant qu’instrumentiste, à quelles qualités étiez-vous le plus sensible chez un chef ?
F.G. : Lorsque je jouais dans les orchestres, j’admirais les chefs qui étaient clairs, calmes et respectueux. En général ces artistes sont de grands musiciens.
Pourquoi êtes-vous devenu chef d’orchestre ?
F.G. : Le répertoire de la trompette n’étant pas aussi riche que celui des violonistes ou des pianistes, j’avoue avoir souffert de ce manque ; c’est donc en partie ce qui m’a poussé à changer de voie. Lorsque j’étais étudiant, je recherchais constamment à travailler sous la direction des plus grands chefs. Ainsi, à l’âge de vingt ans, j’ai pu jouer grâce aux orchestres de jeunes sous la direction d’Haitink, Boulez ou Ozawa…. Il me semble que le point de départ était là, mais il m’a fallu du temps avant d’oser franchir le pas ! Aujourd’hui, je dirige Mozart, Brahms , Debussy… Je prends non seulement du plaisir à les diriger mais aussi à les étudier.
Un chef que vous admirez?
F.G. : J’en admire plusieurs et particulièrement ceux avec qui j’ai travaillé comme Kurt Masur ou Colin Davis mais mon coeur balance pour Haitink ! Il emmène les gens avec lui, toujours avec douceur, parle peu… Et quelle gestique !

Quelles sont vos affinités particulières en termes de répertoire? Dans quel univers vous sentez-vous le plus à l’aise?
F.G. : J’éprouve plus de sensibilité pour des œuvres que pour des compositeurs. Je penche davantage pour la musique du XXème siècle, en particulier la musique française et celle de Richard Strauss. Je me sens plus à l’aise dans Mozart que Beethoven. Quant à Wagner, il me fascine. Concernant la musique contemporaine, je la dirige assez régulièrement et plutôt avec plaisir. J’aime collaborer avec les compositeurs surtout lorsque ceux-ci font preuve de flexibilité ! Certains d’entre eux ne sont pas des interprètes et ne sont pas toujours conscients de la difficulté d’exécution de leurs œuvres. Dans ce cas, il faut donc faire des compromis…
Votre prochain concert parisien est entièrement dédié à la musique française ? Comment avez-vous conçu ce programme ?
F.G. : Le programme tournait autour du Deuxième concerto pour piano de Saint-Saëns et du Concerto pour violoncelle de Lalo. Il fallait choisir une grande œuvre orchestrale. Mon choix s’est porté sur La Péri car l’Orchestre National ne l’a pas jouée depuis longtemps et qu’il s’agit tout simplement d’un chef-d’œuvre absolu ! Cette œuvre mérite sa place au sein du répertoire au même titre que La Mer ou Daphnis et Chloé. Elle me fascine car Dukas y traite l’orchestre avec virtuosité et un grand sens des couleurs, il développe ses thèmes de manière absolument inouïe ! Mais avant tout cette œuvre est d’une extrême sensualité…
