Comment concevez-vous votre rôle d’artiste associé au Théâtre de la Ville ?
C’est d’abord le prolongement d’une collaboration de quinze ans avec Emmanuel Demarcy-Mota. Et la possibilité de développer un travail spécifique sur les écritures d’aujourd’hui dans un théâtre que des auteurs vivants ont investi comme un grand laboratoire. Nous avons inventé des rencontres, des formes, toujours éprouvées en public, avec le texte comme lieu de rassemblement.
Comment cette présence dans le théâtre nourrit-elle votre geste d’écriture ?
Elle invite à se confronter à des esthétiques très variées, à préserver une curiosité pour le geste des autres – écrivains de théâtre, mais aussi des danseurs, des musiciens, des autres langages. Ma relation à l’écriture est extrêmement joyeuse. Me mettre à ma table, c’est vraiment rentrer chez moi. J’espère toujours cette maison la plus ouverte possible ; ça me semble un bon moyen d’échapper à « l’univers constitué à jamais ». Et ça ne renverse pas les obsessions, les entêtements, qui font le suc de l’écriture. De toute façon, on les trimballe.
Pourquoi écrivez-vous au « jeune public » ?
J’aime la compagnie des enfants. Je cherche leur point de vue sur le monde, sur les humains. Créer, c’est toujours questionner ce point de vue. Dans les rêveries vers l’enfance se forgent les rêves essentiels. J’écris depuis l’enfance, pour continuer d’alimenter mon désir d’écrire. Je regagne souvent ces paysages-là parce qu’ils excitent mon appétit d’écrire, et mon appétit des autres. Et puis la santé du théâtre dépend aussi de la relation de joie qu’il est capable (ou pas) d’entretenir avec ses enfants.
Cela appelle-t-il un autre travail sur la langue ?
L’enfance ne rétrécit pas l’espace de la langue, elle l’élargit. J’aime l’idée que d’une plongée réussie dans les rêveries d’enfance découle un rêve de théâtre destiné à tous. C’est une école buissonnière où les projets pédagogiques faillirent devant les projets d’aventures, c’est un territoire d’imprudence. Parce qu’on est contraint de choisir la vie, parce qu’il faut d’abord avoir envie de vivre, comme disait Artaud.
Quelles sont alors vos sources d’inspiration ?
C’est souvent Modane, la ville où je suis né, et le quartier où j’ai grandi, que je revisite, que je transforme, que je détourne. Et puis des enfants que je rencontre, sur le chemin parcouru par mes pièces, auxquels j’emprunte un regard, un mot, une présence, une fable.
Cette expérience a-t-elle bougé l’écrivain que vous êtes ?
Bien sûr. Si j’ai autant de plaisir à écrire, autant d’appétit, c’est parce qu’il y a un horizon d’enfance, parce que l’enfance n’est pas circonscrite à l’hier, parce qu’elle est un présent salutaire. Ce n’est pas un point de vue d’adulte béat devant les jolis-petits-enfants-oh-comme-ils-sont-mignons. C’est un rapport d’homme à homme, si je puis dire. Sauf qu’on n’a pas le même âge, c’est tout.
Wanted Petula s’inscrit dans la suite de Bouli Miro, de Bouli redéboule… Qu’est-ce qui vous a donné envie de retrouver ces personnages ?
Bouli est le premier personnage avec lequel j’ai exploré, en conscience, ces paysages de l’enfance partageable. Il est l’enfant de moi, il m’a poussé dessus. C’est devenu un compagnon de route, Petula aussi et toute cette galaxie de personnages burlesques, plongés dans des situations grotesques, graves, baroques. J’aimerais qu’ils grandissent avec moi, qu’ils aient eux aussi le droit de vieillir et que lecteurs et spectateurs aient envie de grandir, vieillir avec eux. Alors je continue de rêver vers lui et j’imagine qu’il rêve en dehors de moi. Il y a une autonomie magique du texte, un moment où les ombres ne sont pas circonscrites au temps d’écriture ou au livre en tant qu’objet. Bouli existe au-dehors. Il a sa vie, j’ai la mienne. De temps en temps, elles se rejoignent et ça donne ça.
