On l’appelle « face de cuillère ». Parce qu’elle a la figure toute ronde. Depuis sa naissance, elle est un peu de travers en fait, attardée, « spéciale » comme on dit. Elle ne parle pas comme les autres mais elle « voit » les nombres. Si elle pouvait grandir un jour, elle serait chanteuse d’opéra pour donner des morceaux de beauté aux hommes. Mais, elle le sait, le temps l’avalera avant. Autiste, dévorée par un cancer, l’adolescente à peine éclose affronte son existence en sursis en écoutant la Callas, qui chante si bien la tragédie de l’être. Elle raconte son bout de chemin, bientôt rompu par l’à-pic du néant, avec une naïveté déconcertante, avec une lucidité qui ne s’encombre pas de précaution et qui touche juste. Ses parents, tiraillés entre l’amour, la culpabilité, la révolte et leurs démêlés affectifs, ses camarades abrutis de techno, Madame Patate, femme de ménage qui lui apprend la tolérance et rêve de vacances à Ibiza, les médecins de l’hôpital et leur franchise maladroite, le docteur Bernstein, fils d’une rescapée des camps de concentration… Tous, elle les observe, bienveillante et curieuse, se débrouiller avec le malheur. Elle, elle écoute de la musique, elle joue la comédie de la mort, elle vibre, elle s’envole ailleurs. Elle se bricole une « philosophie » avec des bribes d’explications piochées de-ci de-là, pour accepter l’inacceptable. Sa disparition.
Une ode à la beauté de la vie, envers et contre tout
Rincée de tout pathos, de toute amertume, l’écriture de Lee Hall, auteur britannique, scénariste entre autres de Billy Elliott, va droit au but. La traduction de Fabrice Melquiot restitue sans mignardise la candeur crue et les cocasseries du parlé enfantin. La parole suit la logique biscornue d’une enfant qui recoud les propos des adultes par de drolatiques raccourcis et colle sans hiérarchie ce qui marque son esprit, le goût réconfortant du poisson pané, Dieu ou les effets secondaires de la chimiothérapie. Sans doute comprend-elle l’essentiel : que le sens que tout le monde cherche ailleurs se trouve en soi, que « tout le truc d’être vivant, c’est de trouver l’étincelle » et de la faire jaillir vers les autres. Survêt rouge et bonnet enfoncé jusqu’aux oreilles, Romane Bohringer offre sa fraîcheur rayonnante et sa vitalité inexpugnable à cette petite « face de cuillère ». Seule après la classe auprès d’un pupitre d’écolière, la comédienne, remarquablement dirigée par Michel Didym, s’épanouit et se métamorphose. Evitant toute lamentation et enfantillage niais, elle a la force radieuse qu’ont les enfants de jouer, contre tout, malgré tout. Emaillée de cet humour poignant qui concentre toutes les joies et les souffrances mêlées de la vie, le récit, ponctué par la sublime voix de la Callas, montre comment, par la dignité, le courage et l’humanisme, la lumière peut surgir de l’expérience de l’angoisse et de la douleur.
