C’est une petite fille « spéciale ». Face de cuillère, c’est comme ça qu’on l’appelle. Parce qu’elle a la figure toute ronde et la tête de travers. Elle est née comme ça, différente. Elle est nulle pour les jeux, ne parle pas comme les autres mais elle « voit » les nombres. Autiste, disent les médecins. Ils disent aussi qu’elle va mourir, qu’un sale cancer s’est glissé dans son corps et peu à peu le dévore de l’intérieur. Elle aurait bien aimé être chanteuse d’opéra pour donner des morceaux de beauté aux hommes, mais elle sait qu’elle n’aura pas le temps de grandir. Alors elle écoute la Callas, qui chante si bien la tragédie de l’être, elle observe les vivants alentour batailler au quotidien contre les coups de l’existence, tenter de s’en sortir avec la pelote tout emmêlée des sentiments. Son père, philosophe paumé, barré avec une pouf, sa mère noyée dans la vodka, ses camarades abrutis de techno, Madame Patate, femme de ménage qui lui apprend la tolérance et rêve de vacances à Ibiza, les médecins de l’hôpital et leur franchise malhabile, le docteur Bernstein, fils d’une rescapée des camps de concentration… Tous, elle les regarde, curieuse, attentive, se dépatouiller avec la vie.

Elle, elle raconte les heurts d’une enfance mangée par la maladie, puis les rayons, la chimio, l’hôpital. Elle se bricole une « philosophie » en recollant des bribes d’explications attrapées de-ci de-là, des phrases chopées au vol ou des mots perdus qu’elle recueille soigneusement et qu’elle coud ensemble au fil de drolatiques raccourcis. Pour essayer de comprendre, pour accepter l’inacceptable. Sa disparition. Et sans doute comprend-elle l’essentiel : que le sens que tout le monde cherche ailleurs se trouve en soi, que « tout le truc d’être vivant, c’est de trouver l’étincelle » et de la faire jaillir vers les autres. Dans la blancheur fragile d’un décor de papier, Laetitia Poulalion manie sans mignardise la candeur abrupte et les cocasseries du parlé enfantin. Elle gagnerait à poser sa voix mais livre avec une joyeuse franchise le poignant monologue de Lee Hall, auteur britannique, scénariste entre autres de Billy Elliott. Le corps parfois crispé de gestes compulsifs, elle laisse deviner les souffrances de la chair, les ombres qui effraient le cœur. Alain Batis signe une mise en scène astucieuse avec de chiches moyens, usant des marionnettes et du théâtre d’ombre pour donner vie au monde intérieur de cette adolescente à peine éclose… condamnée, mais rayonnante.
