451, c’est le point d’auto-inflammation du papier en degrés Fahrenheit, soit 232,8°. Si Ray Bradbury a choisi cette référence pour intituler son roman paru en 1953, c’est qu’il y décrit une société où les pompiers ont pour mission, non d’éteindre le feu, mais de brûler les livres, dont la détention est interdite. Marqué par les autodafés des nazis, mais aussi par les purges staliniennes et la bombe atomique, l’auteur américain (1920 – 2012) dénonce à travers l’histoire de Montag, un pompier qui finira par se rebeller, la censure, les totalitarismes et la technologie de masse. Son roman qui a inspiré de nombreux artistes – François Truffaut notamment – devient le matériau du premier spectacle de la nouvelle compagnie de Mathieu Coblentz : Théâtre Amer.

Pour lui, Bradbury « donne à cette histoire l’ampleur d’un mythe contemporain : celui de l’homme-livre, qui emploie son cerveau comme ultime espace de liberté et de résistance, gardant vivante la connaissance en attendant de pouvoir la restituer au monde. » À ses comédiens, également musiciens et chanteurs, il demande de restituer le roman comme s’ils l’enregistraient dans un studio de radio pour la dernière fois, à vue, en prenant le parti d’une mise en scène « joyeuse et virulente ».
