Pensez-vous que les personnages ou les personnes que vous portez à la scène aient quelque chose en commun ?
Pierrette Dupoyet : Tous mes spectacles partent de coups de cœur. Quand je porte à la scène des personnes ayant existé comme Joséphine Baker, Alexandra David Néel ou le Capitaine Dreyfus, c’est leur parcours de vie qui me donne envie de les mettre en lumière. Lorsque je m’empare de personnages de fiction (Don Quichotte, Gelsomina…), c’est leur valeur emblématique qui guide mon choix. Ce que toutes ces existences ont en commun, c’est mon amour pour le symbole qu’elles représentent, lié à des valeurs que je défends moi-même dans la vie : Tolérance, Fraternité…
Comment avez-vous procédé pour intégrer le langage dans votre portrait des émotions et des états d’âme de la femme-enfant Gelsomina ?
P.D. : J’étais très jeune lorsque j’ai découvert le film La Strada de Federico Fellini, mais je savais déjà que je serai comédienne. En découvrant le personnage de Gelsomina, qui parlait très peu, j’ai « entendu » ce qu’elle pensait et je me suis dit « un jour, je serai Gelsomina »… Lorsque, bien plus tard, j’ai évoqué mon projet à Federico Fellini, je lui ai dit « vous avez tellement bien filmé le regard de Giulietta Masina que je n’ai eu qu’à poser des mots dessus ».Fellini m’a donné spontanément son accord… Le langage que j’ai donné à Gelsomina est celui d’un cœur pur. Il est très imagé et poétique. Ce petit oiseau effarouché est sublime sans le savoir…
Pourquoi vous êtes-vous emparé de la vaste correspondance entre Cocteau et sa mère ?
P. D. : J’ai toujours été fascinée par le rapport mère-fille et mère-fils. Je me suis déjà impliquée plusieurs fois dans cette relation (les lettres que Rimbaud a écrites à sa mère depuis le désert d’Abyssinie, les lettres de la Marquise de Sévigné à sa fille…). J’ai moi-même écrit un livre avec ma fille Morgane pour tenter de décrypter cette énigme fusionnelle. Jean Cocteau, contrairement à l’image de créateur lumineux que la plupart des gens gardent, avait une grande part d’ombre en lui et a beaucoup souffert de l’incompréhension des autres. Dans cette correspondance, on entend ses peurs, ses doutes et ses chagrins. Cette correspondance est bouleversante car elle est un immense cri : « Aimez-moi ! ».
De quelle manière adaptez-vous L’Etranger de Camus, votre création 2010 ?
P. D. : L’adaptation est évidemment très fidèle à l’oeuvre originale. C’est une mise en espace, lumières et musique du drame lié au « hasard ». J’interprète le personnage de Meursault. Ce qui me frappe dans L’Etranger c’est le terrible « faisceau de circonstances et d’interprétations » qui fait basculer la vie d’un homme. On sort de là meurtri puisqu’il semblerait que ne pas pleurer à l’enterrement de sa mère et aller voir un film comique un lendemain de deuil puissent être des causes si aggravantes qu’elle vous mènent à l’échafaud… Cette réflexion aigüe sur la justice et ceux qui la rendent m’interpelle au plus haut point (je joue régulièrement en prison). Meursault est aussi victime de sa droiture, de son amour pour la vérité simple. Ce n’est pas un calculateur. Il n’use à aucun moment d’un quelconque stratagème pour échapper à la sentence. Il ne cherche pas à fuir ni à impliquer le principal complice, qui l’a pourtant conduit à cette situation. On pourrait presque dire que bien qu’étant un meurtrier, c’est un cœur pur, à l’image de Gelsomina….
