Sept ans avant sa mort, le 9 février 1893, sur la scène de la Scala de Milan, Verdi quitte la scène de l’opéra en renouant avec le genre comique auquel il s’est très peu consacré tout au long de sa carrière. On le sait, le projet construit sur un livret de Boito (inspiré des Joyeuses Commères de Windsor de Shakespeare) s’avère une réussite magistrale. Cette nouvelle production aura le grand mérite de révéler au public français le travail et le talent du grand metteur en scène Mario Martone, familier des plus fameuses scènes (Festival Rossini de Pesaro, Covent Garden, Scala de Milan), et reconnu pour sa mise en scène des opéras Mozart-Da Ponte au San Carlo de Naples. Avec Alain Altinoglu (direction musicale), l’Orchestre de Paris (pour la première fois dans la fosse du TCE !) et une excellente distribution vocale de valeurs sûres (Alessandro Corbelli, Anna Caterina Antonacci, Ludovic Tézier, Marie-Nicole Lemieux…).
