Bien avant Verdi, Antonio Salieri s’est emparé de la comédie de Shakespeare Les Joyeuses Commères de Windsor et de son protagoniste, Sir John Falstaff. Sans prétendre au statut de chef-d’œuvre, l’opéra bouffe qu’il en a tiré est plutôt alerte et rend bien la truculence du personnage à travers un ton assez souvent parodique et une orchestration qui répond bien à l’esprit du théâtre de Shakespeare. Surtout, l’œuvre recèle quelques très beaux airs qui ne sont pas sans évoquer le Mozart des Noces de Figaro. Iñaki Encina Oyón, remarqué ces dernières années au Théâtre Roger Barat (dans Abu Hassan de Weber puis Le Consul de Menotti), dirige l’ensemble Diderot, de jeunes musiciens issus de l’Académie du Concert d’Astrée, et les chanteurs Philippe Brocard, Sébastian Monti, Yun Jung Choi, Eléonore Pancrazi, Wiard Witholt, Maria Virginia Savastano et Olivier Déjean.
