Tragédie de gens ordinaires à l’universelle dimension, Fanny est le deuxième volet de la célèbre trilogie marseillaise de Marcel Pagnol. Après le départ de Marius pour les Iles sous le Vent, César se morfond dans son café du Vieux-Port pendant que germe dans le ventre de la belle Fanny la preuve de sa filiation honteuse. Honoré Panisse, le maître voilier du port, de trente ans son aîné, achète la main et l’enfant de la belle en échange de la respectabilité et de la fortune. Cette comédie cruelle aux accents profondément dramatiques, qui prouve qu’il ne faut pas nécessairement être reine pour souffrir avec grandeur et qu’un maître voilier peut être aussi retors dans ses chantages qu’un puissant politique, est sans doute l’un des plus beaux hommages que l’art ait jamais rendu à la noblesse des cœurs populaires. Irène Bonnaud, échappant au piège de la copie ou du pastiche, a débarrassé l’univers de Pagnol de ses particularismes marseillais et installe ses comédiens dans un décor aux murs verdâtres, successivement bar de César, maison d’Honorine et salon de Panisse, en tâchant d’éviter le kitch du pittoresque.
Quelques éclats d’émotion dans un ensemble confondant d’ennui
La troisième partie du spectacle est l’occasion pour Marie-Sophie Ferdane (Fanny) et Andrzej Seweryn (Panisse) d’assez jolis moments de bravoure en parents sacrificiels d’un enfant dont la conception déshonorante noue les attachements autour de lui. Mais cet ultime tableau ne parvient pas à rattraper un spectacle qui sonne faux pendant les deux premiers actes et où seule la faconde de Catherine Ferran permet quelques vrais éclats de drôlerie. Gilles David est un César désolant d’inauthenticité et ses camarades ne sont pas plus crédibles que lui en buveurs du Vieux-Port. Quelques anachronismes, entre téléphone portable et scies musicales pseudo-décalées, alourdissent davantage encore le jeu compassé des acteurs qui ne parviennent pas à secouer l’ennui qui s’étire en longueur. Irène Bonnaud a réussi déjà de très beaux, très émouvants et très intelligents spectacles et elle n’a plus à prouver qu’elle est une des metteurs en scène les plus doués de sa génération, mais son Fanny est définitivement à ranger dans les oubliettes de son talent.
