Aucun apaisement possible pour les contemporains de Musset, petits enfants d’un siècle cupide et corrompu : ni l’amour, ni la nature, ni l’art, ni la politique ne peuvent soigner leur anorexie existentielle. Reste, dans ce cloaque qu’est le monde, quelques solutions : boire sans soif, s’amuser des apparences et contre elles, railler les fausses gloires en arrachant les perruques des monarques débiles et protéger les filles de mariages imbéciles avec des crétins prétentieux. Le combat de Fantasio qui se masque pour mieux dévoiler les autres fut aussi celui de Musset (« j’ai l’impression d’appartenir à un monde qui refuse sa propre vérité », disait-il) et peut encore être celui de la jeunesse actuelle dont Julia Vidit affirme qu’elle retrouve chez Musset et ses héros des accents fraternels, de communes angoisses et des colères identiques qui appuient la nécessité de monter cette pièce « audacieuse et ignorée ». Magnifique terrain de jeu et d’expériences pour les acteurs et moyen d’interroger le théâtre et sa mise en crise autant que la question de l’engagement dans un monde exténué et somnolent, Fantasio est l’occasion pour Julia Vidit de jouer des niveaux de fiction et de la mise en abyme théâtrale qu’offre ce texte riche, drôle et poétique.
