Peu goûtée à sa création en 1872, perdue dans l’incendie de la Salle Favart quinze ans plus tard, la partition de Fantasio a dû attendre près d’un siècle et demi pour retrouver la scène. Destinée à l’Opéra-Comique, la production de Thomas Jolly a été présentée, pour cause de travaux Salle Favart, au Théâtre du Châtelet en 2017. Le metteur en scène y souligne avec finesse et justesse toutes les ambiguïtés, les faux-semblants de cette œuvre tirée de Musset : entre ombre et lumière, grisaille et couleurs éclatantes, grand spectacle et tréteaux, cette histoire où l’amour, la bouffonnerie et la haute diplomatie tressent une intrigue serrée est rendue avec un sens du merveilleux qui colle parfaitement avec la musique d’Offenbach, pas moins captivante ici que dans Les Contes d’Hoffmann. Le chef Laurent Campellone était, avec Thomas Jolly, il y a six ans, l’autre grand artisan de cette redécouverte. Ils se retrouvent dans une distribution en partie renouvelée avec la prise de rôle attendue de Gaëlle Arquez en Fantasio et Jodie Devos en Princesse Elsbeth, l’Orchestre de chambre de Paris et, toujours, personnage à part entière, le remarquable chœur Aedes.
