Fantasio, c’est le héros romantique derrière lequel on devine le double de Musset. Blasé, cynique, mais prêt à tout pour l’amour, en s’opposant aux normes bien usées de sa société. Une sorte de rocker, en somme, a peut-être pensé Emmanuel Besnault pour décider de mêler à la langue de Musset des airs des Doors, de Bowie, Nick Cave ou PJ Harvey. La comédie de ce jeune homme révolté qui démarre sans idéaux puis s’attaque rien moins qu’au pouvoir royal pour soustraire la fille du roi à un mariage arrangé se déploie en un spectacle plein de fougue, aux couleurs de Venise. Une ode à la jeunesse à travers un héros qui, malgré tout, « croit au pouvoir de ses actes et de l’engagement ».
