« Que cela m’ennuie que tout le monde s’amuse ! » lâche Fantasio dans un soupir grisé, le cœur repu de mélancolique désinvolture, émoustillé pourtant d’une fantaisie provocante. Jeune homme désœuvré, sans autre vocation que de s’endetter ou de cueillir des chimères aux badines étoiles, il noie son oisiveté désenchantée dans les tavernes d’un royaume d’opérette, c’est-à-dire la Bavière. « Si je pouvais seulement sortir de ma peau pendant une heure ou deux ! » rêvasse-t-il… La mort du bouffon du roi lui offre belle occasion : sitôt le voilà qui se glisse dans ses dépouilles et s’introduit à la Cour, trouvant sous les grimaces de l’inutile le moyen de se rendre utile. La princesse Elsbeth en effet doit épouser le prince de Mantoue, fat couronné d’une crétinerie notoire, afin de satisfaire la raison d’état et d’éviter une guerre imminente. Décalottant l’imposture royale d’un coup d’hameçon passablement éméché, Fantasio brise net les transactions amoureuses, sans le vouloir – et sans souci non plus des représailles militaires.
Parodie
Inspirée d’un conte d’Hoffmann, hantée de marivaudages et de songes shakespeariens, la piècede Musset s’avance sous la figure du dédoublement, mêlant alacrité fanfaronne, détresse fantasque et cynisme révolté. La jeune metteuse en scène Julia Vidit veut très justement révéler l’envers du décor pour y faire résonner l’écho de notre époque vidée de pensée politique autant que bourrée de simulacres. S’appuyant sur l’habile scénographie à double face de Thibaut Fack et les costumes acidulés de Valérie Ranchoux, elle s’amuse ostensiblement avec les artifices du théâtre et souligne les mœurs hypocrites de cette Cour de cocagne. Mais pousser jusqu’à la farce grotesque ne fait sens que si rôdent l’ombre troublante des jeux de masques, le murmure d’une légèreté amère perlée de nostalgie. Beaucoup des comédiens oublient les nuances et s’abiment dans la caricature, singeant à grosse sueur les gesticulations de ces fantoches en goguette. Du coup, Fantasio reste coincé dans la parodie…
