Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker avait vingt ans quand elle créa Fase, Four movement to the music of Steve Reich. Et cette chorégraphie immuable, demandant une concentration inouïe, tient merveilleusement bien la route au fil des années. Les quatre compositions de Steve Reich, qui s’échelonnent entre 1966 et 1972, ont toutes pour point commun le processus du « phasing » (ou déphasage en français) qu’il découvre par hasard en 1965, alors qu’un dysfonctionnement de deux magnétophones qu’il utilisait démarrèrent à l’unisson, mais perdirent peu à peu leur synchronisme en créant un déphasage graduel. Bien entendu, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, se sert de ce processus dans sa chorégraphie. Chacune des deux danseuses joue les deux lignes qui se décalent et se recalent dans une danse vertigineuse, hypnotisante, et surtout absorbante. Et si la danse semble se calquer sur la musique, de fait, elles ne se superposent jamais. Fase n’est pas une incarnation de la musique mais une véritable interprétation de la partition par un instrument original et fondamental : le corps.
