Le public parisien va enfin pouvoir admirer cette production qui, manque de chance, devait faire ses débuts en mars 2020. Ce ne sera pas une complète découverte cependant puisque l’ouvrage avait été donné à huis clos puis diffusé sur la chaîne Culturebox. Le metteur en scène allemand, qui avait déjà signé un retentissant Tannhäuser à Bayreuth en 2019, y mêle intelligemment jeu d’acteurs et vidéo dans une transposition dans le Paris d’aujourd’hui, tout autant réaliste que fantasmé. Benjamin Bernheim tient le rôle-titre, parfaitement à sa mesure, aux côtés de Christian van Horn (Méphisto), Florian Sempey (Valentin) et Angel Blue (Marguerite). Le toujours excellent Thomas Hengelbrock est dans la fosse.
