Sur quoi se fondent les textes que vous écrivez pour la scène ?
Fellag : Il y a en filigrane dans toutes les histoires que je raconte, l’éternelle absurdité des situations de toutes sortes auxquelles sont confrontés les Algériens. Mais, comme l’Algérien n’a pas le monopole de la « mal-vie » et qu’il partage la plupart de ses travers avec l’ensemble de l’humanité, j’essaie de trouver le fil qui le relie à l’universel. Nous sommes au théâtre, donc dans un monde sublimé, transcendé, un laboratoire de recherches en fantasmagories qu’il ne faut surtout pas prendre au premier degré. Si le théâtre veut donner du monde une vision au premier degré, il s’éloigne de sa mission. Je suis d’abord et avant tout un comédien qui raconte un peuple qui l’inspire et le nourrit. Je m’amuse à dévoiler au spectateur, de manière symbolique, les sentiments d’une société qui traverse des temps difficiles, ainsi que les mécanismes de défense qu’elle déploie pour vivre ou survivre.
Vos spectacles comportent une véritable dimension sociale, voire politique…
F. : Le théâtre travaille sur le matériau humain. C’est son essence. L’humain, lui, est travaillé quotidiennement par le politique et il est façonné par les conditions sociologiques dans lesquelles il évolue. Il est le fruit de ces conditions. Sa psychologie, ses rêves, ses fantasmes, ses colères, son espoir, en dépendent.

Mon écriture ne serait pas crédible si elle ne tenait pas compte de tout cela. Et comme aujourd’hui, je vis, travaille et crée en France, ma vision s’imprègne de l’air du temps qui y règne et que je m’amuse à faire souffler dans mes spectacles. Mais, sans jamais que ce soit directement politique. Je m’intéresse beaucoup aux regards que les Français portent sur les Algériens et que les Algériens portent sur les Français.
Qu’est-ce que révèlent ces regards ?
F. : Ces regards de « chiens et chats » sont le produit de 130 ans de colonisation, mais aussi de 100 ans d’immigration. Ils sont ancrés dans notre conscient et notre inconscient collectifs. Il y a de l’électricité dans l’air entre nous. On peut se brûler les doigts au moindre écart. Si j’explore ces relations, ce n’est pas par amour du danger, mais parce que c’est là qu’il faut aller si l’on veut éteindre l’incendie et crever l’abcès. L’humoriste américain Lenny Bruce a dit un jour : « Je répéterai le mot nègre autant de fois qu’il le faut, jusqu’à le rendre exsangue de toute pensée raciste ». J’essaie, à mon échelle et pour leur échapper, de m’amuser avec les clichés que les autres ont de nous, que nous avons sur nous-mêmes, et aussi que nous avons sur les autres. J’attaque au vitriol de l’humour la dure carapace dont sont faits certains clichés.
