La Société Chopin, dont la fondation en 1911 avait été présidée entre autres par Maurice Ravel, n’a eu de cesse de célébrer l’universalité de la musique du compositeur romantique. Depuis 1983, le festival organisé aux Jardins de Bagatelle par la Société Chopin invite les pianistes du monde entier à se pencher encore et encore sur les mazurkas, nocturnes, valses et autres polonaises mais aussi à les confronter à la musique des contemporains de Chopin ou à celle de ses héritiers plus ou moins directs. Le festival met cette année en lumière l’œuvre pianistique de Karol Szymanowski (1882-1937), au moment même où l’Opéra Bastille accueille le magnifique opéra du compositeur, Le Roi Roger. Pour cette rétrospective inédite, l’Orangerie réunit quelques pianistes majeurs, dont, en ouverture, le Britannique Paul Crossley, trop peu présent en France bien qu’il soit un très fin interprète de Debussy ou Fauré. À sa suite, Alexander Ghindin, Philippe Cassard, Mikhaïl Rudy ou encore Wojciech Switala, professeur à l’Académie Szymanowski de Katowice, poursuivront ce triple hommage à Chopin, à Szymanowski et au piano.
