L’abbaye de Clairvaux est connue pour abriter l’une des prisons les plus sécurisées de France, où l’on trouvait, parmi les ex-pensionnaires, le tueur de l’est parisien Guy Georges ou le terroriste Carlos. Ce que l’on sait moins, c’est que l’Abbaye accueille aussi, sur un week-end de septembre, un festival de musique. On pourra y entendre cette année le pianiste Jean-Claude Pennetier dans des œuvres de Liszt, Schumann et Schubert (le 22 septembre), ou encore des polyphonies corses par l’ensemble Barbara Furtuna (le 22 septembre). Mais surtout, le Festival a commandé une nouvelle œuvre pour chœur et instruments à Philippe Hersant, d’après des textes de détenus de la Maison centrale de Clairvaux. On ne pouvait imaginer meilleur choix que celui du compositeur du Château des Carpathes, dont le langage, d’une rare sincérité, s’imprègne d’influences multiples (baroque, musiques traditionnelles) sans jamais tomber dans l’imitation.
