Ce qui distingue les Danel des autres quatuors à cordes, c’est assurément leur engagement pour la musique contemporaine. La formation belge a collaboré avec des compositeurs d’esthétiques très différentes, de Wolfgang Rihm à Pascal Dusapin en passant par Nicolas Bacri. Dans le cadre du festival que le quatuor organise à l’Abbaye du Pin, un hommage est rendu cette année à Olivier Greif, qui nous a quittés il y a dix ans. Un compositeur inclassable, à l’écriture aussi raffinée qu’expressive, marquée par la disparition d’une grande partie de sa famille dans les camps de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Mais ne limitons pas le Quatuor Danel à la musique contemporaine : leur jeu précis et engagé peut également faire des merveilles dans les répertoires classique et romantique. On retrouve d’ailleurs au programme de l’abbaye cistercienne des œuvres de Tchaïkovski, Fauré ou encore Poulenc. L’occasion aussi d’entendre un autre quatuor à l’affiche du festival : les Fitzwilliam, formation fondée à Cambridge en 1968.
