Jamais en panne d’originalité, le festival s’ouvre cette année avec La Magicienne de Fromental Halévy (avec Norah Amsellem et Marianne Crebassa), une façon pour René Koering, fondateur de la manifestation en 1985, d’œuvrer à la réappropriation du répertoire lyrique français du xixe siècle. La redécouverte par Geoffroy Jourdain et Les Cris de Paris (le 14 juillet) du Paradis perdu, oratorio de Théodore Dubois (1837-1924), organiste et directeur du Conservatoire (quelque peu réactionnaire, dit-on…), procède de la même démarche, de même que la Semiramis (1802) de Charles-Simon Catel, exhumée par Hervé Niquet (le 25). C’est là un chantier parmi les nombreux qui occupent le directeur du festival depuis plus d’un quart de siècle. Un autre est de donner sa place à la musique de notre temps. Le festival a ainsi souvent joué la musique de Iannis Xenakis et lui rend hommage (le 18 juillet), à l’occasion du dixième anniversaire de sa disparition avec l’interprétation de son Oresteia, dirigée par Gürer Aykal avec une distribution mêlant – tout un symbole – des chœurs grec, turc et français (le chœur d’enfants Opéra Junior) et le baryton Spyros Sakkas, créateur de l’œuvre.
Créations et résurrections
D’autres créations (Vorspiel de Bernard-Olivier Faguet par l’Orchestre de la RAI de Turin, le Concerto pour violon de James MacMillan composé pour Vadim Repin) voisineront avec la résurrection d’œuvres oubliées (l’Agrippina, « scène de concert » de l’Allemand Friedrich Gernsheim, un proche de Brahms que l’histoire de la musique a oublié, chantée par Nora Gubisch ; la Rapsodie espagnole de Liszt transcrite pour piano et orchestre par Busoni). Et, comme toujours, le festival voit défiler les vedettes (Evgeny Kissin, Maria João Pires, Vivica Genaux, le Quatuor Prazak) et les plus jeunes, invités des concerts du midi et des rendez-vous en région.
