En donnant naissance à ce festival en 1980, le metteur en scène Olivier Desbordes anticipait la spectaculaire vague de renouveau qu’a connu depuis la scène lyrique française en multipliant des formes opératiques alternatives, plus ouvertes sur le plan esthétique, légères sur le plan des effectifs mais aussi mobiles pour partir à la rencontre de tous les publics… Deux créations sont cette année à l’affiche avec la découverte ou presque du très rare Lost in the Stars (Perdu dans les étoiles), la dernière œuvre de Kurt Weill, créée à Broadway en 1949 et inspirée par la situation de ségrégation raciale en Afrique du Sud, et une relecture de Madame Butterfly de Puccini. Dans les deux cas, le traditionnel tandem composé d’Olivier Desbordes pour la mise en scène et de Dominique Trottein pour la direction musicale se reconstitue. Deux reprises de la compagnie Opéra Eclaté sont aussi à l’affiche (La Flûte enchantée et La Belle Hélène) ainsi qu’une jolie série de concerts…
