Le festival de Saintes, créé en 1972, fut l’un des premiers grands festivals français consacrés à la musique baroque. De William Christie à Jordi Savall en passant par Andréas Staier, nombreux sont les grands noms de la musique ancienne qui ont fait leurs débuts à l’Abbaye aux Dames. Cette année encore, la programmation baroque aura une place de choix, avec par exemple l’ensemble d’Amandine Beyer Gli Incogniti, ou encore les Talens Lyriques de Christophe Rousset qui interpréteront Les Nations de Couperin. Depuis quelques années, le festival a également ouvert ses portes au romantisme et à la musique d’aujourd’hui, et confronte joyeusement les époques avec toujours la même rigueur artistique. Pour sa première venue à Saintes, l’orchestre Les Siècles, dirigé par François-Xavier Roth, illustrera parfaitement l’esprit du festival. En effet, il balaye un vaste répertoire allant du 17e siècle à nos jours et utilise les instruments de chaque époque, proposant ainsi une démarche éloquente de mise en perspective historique de plusieurs siècles de création musicale.
