En guise d’avant-propos, on apprend que le jazz gitan est « la plus moderne et la plus ancestrale des musiques populaires. Elle est jazz, disco, swing, valse, chanson, folklorique, funk ou soul. » Musique caméléon qui sut se glisser dans bien d’autres idiomes, le jazz « manouche » est malgré tout, avant tout, une affaire de style. Ce style qui permit à Django, le parrain de ce festival qui s’est enraciné dans la ville où il est enterré, de s’imposer comme une référence majuscule de la musique mondiale. Le guitariste aura une influence considérable sur les générations à venir, qu’on le reprenne à la lettre ou qu’on s’en inspire dans l’esprit. C’est à ce prisme qu’il faut lire la liste des musiciens conviés cette année : certains dans le droit fil de l’héritage, comme le trio de Steeve Lafont ou l’hommage à Babik Reinhardt, certains plus dans la grande histoire de ce peuple parti d’Inde, comme la rencontre entre Faiz Ali Faiz et Titi Robin ou l’orchestre de Goran Bregovic, et enfin, tous les autres, d’Avishai Cohen à Erik Truffaz, dont on imagine qu’en bons esthètes, ils ont un jour ou l’autre apprécié d’être embarqués sur ces si beaux « Nuages ».
