Créé en 1981, le festival Les Translatines s’affirme comme « la tête de pont du théâtre latino-américain et ibérique en France ». Se transformant cette année en biennale, ce rendez-vous théâtral basque (qui se partage entre Bayonne, Anglet, Boucau et Biarritz) fait le pari, depuis près de trente ans, du dialogue et des rencontres entre professionnels de part et d’autres de l’Atlantique. Pour cette édition 2009, le directeur artistique du festival, Jean-Marie Broucaret, a choisi de mettre à l’honneur le théâtre argentin. Daniel Veronese (qui, après Anton Tchekhov, mène une recherche sur l’œuvre d’Henrik Ibsen en s’appropriant Maison de poupée et Hedda Gabler), Emilio Garcia Webhi (qui crée Dolor Exquisito, d’après l’œuvre de Sophie Calle), Rafael Spregelburd (qui signe la mise en scène de sa pièce Buenos Aires), Claudio Tolcachir, Sergio Mercurio, Eduardo Pavlovski… Parallèlement à des débats, des apéritifs critiques, des expositions urbaines et des lectures, ce sont ainsi quelques-uns des artistes les plus emblématiques du paysage théâtral argentin qui présenteront cette année leurs créations aux Translatines. Des artistes élaborant un théâtre « intime et universel, étranger et familier », un théâtre « mêlant le rire à l’inquiétude des êtres du monde ».
